WHY I FIGHT – Marty Farrell
WHY I FIGHT – What’s your name, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Marty Farrell and I am from Dorchester, Mass. I teach the art of boxing at EverybodyFights and am an Athletic Director for the City of Boston. I have over 40 years of hands on experience in boxing, martial arts, and marathons, triathlons and, more recently, obstacle course racing.
What makes you a fighter?
Back in 2012, after coming out of boxing retirement, I was training the Boston Police Boxing team in a competition against the New York team. and fighting on the card myself. I won the Masters cruiser weight division but suffered a 2nd spinal injury which caused me to have spinal surgery. I fractured 6 vertebrates and had to learn how to walk again. I was told I would most likely never run, box or do the physical things I enjoyed all my life. Upon hearing this, I immediately decided to just prove them all wrong. So I crawled, walked, boxed, and finally ran my way back to where I am today. I believe if it was not for my discipline of being a fighter, I probably would not be were I am today. In my life I give 100%, I never quit. Period. When I get knocked down in and out of the ring, I get back up and finish the fight.
What do you fight for?
I fight for my family, friends, and of course, my competitive fighting team. I fight for the underdogs, I fight to change peoples lives thru the art and discipline of boxing which I have learned and used in my life .
What inspires you to take the hits and keep on fighting?
I am inspired by the challenges life and what it gives us and by facing those challenges head on and winning. As you can probably tell, I am very competitive by nature.
If you could fight side-by-side with one person, past or present, who would it be?
