WHYIFIGHT: What’s your name, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Barb! I am from Columbus OH and moved to Boston about six years ago. I am a Design Content Manager and Fashion Designer/Illustrator – currently, I make bikinis for fitness competitors.
What makes you a fighter?
Although I was blessed with a wonderful family and life growing up, I ended up going down a very dark path of drug and alcohol addiction … then about 13 years ago, I was the victim of a violent crime and that was the catalyst I needed to make a change in my life and I found recovery. I have been sober ever since. Although life has been a series of ups and downs, I never give up the fight. I know I was lucky to have been given a second chance when many others are not, and it’s up to me to seize every moment, opportunity and keep fighting.
What do you fight for?
I fight for continued growth and sobriety, to show others the way to a better life, to offer hope to those that have none, I fight to be strong and healthy and prove that age does not define me.
What inspires you to take the hits and keep on fighting?
I am inspired by all of the amazing people who, like me, have overcome great difficulties and yet continue on… I know there are times that I want to just give up, but when I think about where I have been and how far I have come, I know that giving up is NOT an option.
I am inspired by the EBF Community! When I joined EBF I was bored and uninspired with gyms and workouts. I wasn’t eating very well and was gaining weight and feeling bad about myself. When I started boxing, I knew I had discovered the workout that would change my life. I got on track to being fit and inspired by many people I have encountered, was able to make the commitment to becoming an NPC competitor. And my amazing Fitfam at EBF has supported and encouraged me every step of the way
If you could fight side-by-side with one person, past or present, who would it be?
What is your Fight Fuel?
Right now I am in prep for an NPC Bikini Competition so basically, all I eat is protein and veggies!
What is your Fight Song?
I have many and it usually depends on my mood, but, I’m a grunge girl through and through! Any good, hard hitting 90’s music such as Alice in Chains, Nirvana and STP.
What is your favorite EBF class?
TRAINx360 or any BAGS class! I do about 2-3 of each per week!! I get the cardio I need from doing these classes so I have not had to set foot on a “dreadmill” during my entire competition prep!
Who is your favorite EBF Trainer and why?
No way can I choose just one! I have been coming to EBF since the beginning so I have been taught by all the best! Every single trainer I have taken a class from has taught me something new and inspires me every time. There is magic in this place and it comes from the incredible trainers and their passion for what they do.
How do you fight it forward?
I fight it forward by sharing my experience, strength, and hope my past is my greatest asset in helping others who may have shared similar experiences, I also fight it forward by encouraging others to get fit and healthy and offering support because I know how hard it can be!
