Fight Faster: 3 Local Superfoods to Up your Energy in the Ring

Cacao, maca, chia seeds… any of these trendy superfoods ring a bell?

Superfoods, a special category of foods found in nature, calorie sparse and nutrient dense, are known for their high content of antioxidants and essential nutrients.

These days, for some reason, it seems the more exotic superfoods are getting all the attention. Dominican cacao, Peruvian maca, chia seeds from the mountains of Guatemala.

But what about the superfoods in your own backyard?

To keep up your energy in the ring this fall, consider adding some local superfoods to your diet. We’ll get you started with a list of our TOP 3.

1. Kale

Why? Kale is one of the veggies with the highest ORAC rating (oxygen radical absorbance capacity), which measures a foods’ ability to scavenge free radicals. Free radicals cause damage to the body at a cellular level leading to several diseases including cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes, and arthritis.

Prep Tip: Massage your kale. Break the leaves off the stalks, add a few tbsp. olive oil, lemon juice and sea salt. Get your hands in there and massage your kale for 20 seconds or so. This will not only dial up the flavor but will also make it easier to digest.

2. Blueberries

Why? Their color. Yup, that’s right. Their deep blue color is due to their high content of flavonoids, natural compounds that protect the brain’s neurons.

Our favorite summer recipe: Berry chia jam! Make this recipe(http://www.teamjanda.com/berry-chia-jam-detox-approved-dessert/with a mix of blueberries and raspberries to spread on toast or as a topping to your favorite healthy chocolate treat.

3. Bee pollen

Why? It’s more rich in protein than any animal source, containing more amino acids than beef, eggs, or cheese of equal weight. In addition to the protein, bee pollen’s carbs and B vitamins help fight off fatigue and could keep you going all day long.

Where to find it: Follow the Honey (http://www.followthehoney.com/) is our favorite local spot in Cambridge. If you’re not from the area, check out your local health food stores and/or specialty shops.

There you go! Choose at least one of the above for starters and find a way to make it a regular part of your diet.

Now, get back to the ring, will you?
